WHAT 2024 LOOKED LIKE
2024 was the year we hit five. Five years of Bye Bye Plastic as a foundation, five years of pushing the #PlasticFreeParty from a nice idea to a thing venues actually sign up for. This year the proof showed up: 24 French venues that pledged to kill single-use plastic bottles by the end of 2024 got there, and then kept going past the brief. One of them started bottling their own wine. We did not ask them to do that.
It was also a year of things finally shipping. Plastic Footprint Calculator V1.0 went live, giving organizers real CO2e and waste numbers instead of vibes. We ran the Earth Day & Night Weekender across four cities in 48 hours, from Barcelona to Los Angeles. We took the mission onto a padel court in Miami with 32 teams and 250+ people. And we picked up two awards we did not see coming: Best Initiative Using Music to Promote Environmental Wellbeing at the Music Cities Awards, and a first-ever Artist Activism nod from the International Music Managers Forum.
The numbers, as always, are a floor and not a ceiling. 317,521+ bottles and 422,115+ cups kept off the dancefloor. 42.7 tonnes of plastic that never got made and never hit landfill. Five years in, that adds up to 79 venues and events transitioned and 1,380,680+ dancers reached. Not bad for a movement that started with one DJ asking why the party has to cost the planet.
